Can you name anyone in history (good or bad) who’s had their name used as a cuss word other than Jesus ? Think about it now. Hitler, Napoleon, Shakespeare, Newton, Buddha, Muhammad, or how about Mother Teresa ? Go ahead, try to think of one. Don’t worry, I’ll wait. See, you can’t do it. I knew it. There’s only ONE PERSON whose name is used as a cuss word to express disgust and it’s ALWAYS Jesus. He’s the one who said to “Love your enemies” and “pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Matthew 5:43-44), and yet, they use the ‘F’ word in the middle of His name and openly blaspheme Him. It’s so common that people don’t even REALIZE what they’re saying anymore. So if you’re wondering why they only use Jesus’ name as a cuss word in TV, movies, and pop culture, then today is your day. Today, will be the day in which your eyes will be opened.
Now let’s get right to it. You ready ? Grab a pen ! They defile His holy, sacred name because there is great power in the name of Jesus Christ ! Again ! There is GREAT POWER in the name of JESUS CHRIST ! His name is the most powerful name there is, and that’s why so many use His name in ways that discredit His holy character. Have you noticed they never curse with Buddha or Allah ? I’ve never heard anyone curse using the name Confucius ! It’s ALWAYS the name of Jesus because there is power in His name and there is no power in those other names. They always go for the big name — JESUS CHRIST — and there’s a reason for that. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6), and deep down they know He is the truth, and they use His name (subconsciously or not) as a cuss word, or in vain, so that it loses power, but you CANNOT destroy the truth. Never !
Some of you are like, ‘Derek, I didn’t realize that saying, ‘Jesus F’N Christ’ or ‘Jesus Christ’ in a blasphemous way was such a big deal. I don’t mean to offend anyone. It just rolls off my tongue.’ I understand, but let me tell you something, alright. I mean, let’s dig deep here for a minute. We’re family. We’re here on a Tuesday morning together, alright. Listen, ask someone how they would react if you called their mom a whore, or used their dad’s name in a disrespectful way. They would have every right to be deeply offended, and you would be offended too if someone dishonored your parents that way. Well, I’m glad to tell ya that Jesus Christ is NOT a curse word. He’s my Savior ! And blasphemy offends me, but I’m even MORE concerned for the blasphemer. It would be far more sensible to hold a metal object in a lightning storm, than to mock the God who gave you life, or misuse His name.
You see, the third Commandment says, “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain;” (Exodus 20:7), but the verse doesn’t end there. The second half warns, “for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” In other words, using God’s name in vain has real ramifications for the blasphemer. According to the Bible, there is no other name on earth that can save man other than Jesus Christ, who is God in the flesh. Acts 4:12 states, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” So when Jesus’ name is used as a cuss word, it desensitizes people to the only name that can save them, and trivializes the reality of Heaven and Hell. Blasphemy is not about Jesus being offended, but about people being led AWAY from Him, and the Lord will not hold the blasphemer ‘guiltless.’
By the way, before I was a Christian, I used God’s name in vain, so I’m not singling anyone out. I know it’s nearly impossible nowadays to watch TV, a movie, or even speak among mixed company where someone isn’t using Jesus’ name as a curse word, and many do so not out of malice, but out of habit, but I encourage everyone reading to give this serious thought. The Bible says your enemies take your name in vain (Psalms 139:20), and when you use Jesus’ name in vain, you make Him an enemy, but He is not your enemy. Want proof ? Look at the following verse: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). In other words, Jesus laid down His life for YOU and paid for your sin, so you could live, and He’s the best friend you have. Think about that — and watch the clip below. Oh, and thank you for taking the time to read this.
